Sr. Mechanical Designer
Position:  Sr. Mechanical Designer
Reports to: Mechanical Design Group Leader
Mechanical Designer Job Description:

Design the mechanical portion of custom automation equipment to client and IAI specifications. Use research techniques, combined with various outside sources of information, to create and verify the design.

Mechanical Designer Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design of larger and technically complex automation equipment
  • Delegate duties and coordinate the design process for a team of internal designers and external contractors
  • Utilize technical knowledge and experience to produce superior designs
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and research new processes and methodologies
  • Utilize IAI Quotation and Project Request Form to understand client requirements, determine project direction and required project features
  • Designs reflect the scope of work quoted and any feature that deviate from the scope has prior approval by design management or sales representative
  • Use appropriate methods to generate and verify the design
  • Meet with design management and IAI sales representative to evaluate the design and ensure that design requirements are met
  • Communicate project concerns, project status, and design solutions with management, fellow staff and clients
  • Presents the design to the client, acquires client signoff the design concept to proceed with detailing and manufacturing
  • Works cooperatively with clients, fellow employees, contractors, management, and suppliers
  • Create and maintain efficiency in the design process
  • Project Management of large-scale projects
  • Coordinate the design process while accommodating the requirements of other departments
  • Works in conjunction with the other members of the team, such as the electrical designer and the mechanical assembler/developer during all stages of machine design/build
  • Completes the mechanical design and detailing of fixtures, jigs, and machines. Create mechanical designs that are economical to produce, easy to assemble and simply maintained
  • Assists other designers with the mechanical design and detailing of larger systems
  • Completes all required machine build drawings (drafting) as required
  • Completes “as built” drawing updates on machinery when required, reviews updates/changes with the other departments when required
  • Generates Bill of Materials (BOM) for both purchased parts and raw manufactured materials as required
  • Assists other IAI personnel during the equipment build, observes and monitors how the build is progressing
  • Manages all assigned tasks in a neat and timely fashion while striving to maintain budgeted hours
Occupational Health and Safety Act Responsibilities:

Workers have a general duty to protect their own health and safety and that of others around them. Workers must:

  • Work in compliance to the Act and Regulations
  • Use or wear any equipment, protective devices or clothing required by the employer
  • Not move or make ineffective any protective devices or clothing required by the employer
  • Report to the employer or supervisor any known hazards or missing or defective equipment or protective devices
  • Report any known violation of the Act or regulations to the employer or supervisor

Workers should be proactive about health and safety. That means that workers must not only comply with the law, the employer’s policies and workplace procedures, but they should also make suggestions to improve health and safety. Workers may also bring health and safety concerns and suggestions directly to the Joint Health and Safety Representative (Members names are listed on the Health and Safety Bulletin Board).

Physical Demands:

This position may require frequent Sitting. Working in the Mechanical Design department also requires constant cervical flexion, the chin to chest movement. Maximum lifting weight can reach about 50lbs, maximum carrying weight is about 40lbs, and the maximum pushing and pulling weights can reach 100-150lbs. Constant forward reach with both arms is necessary as well as frequent grasping. Working in this position requires a very strong ability to work alone and self-supervise as well a strongly established ability to supervise others. It also requires the ability to handle attention to detail, tight deadlines, responsibility and accountability as well as the ability to multi-task.

Education Requirements and Experience:


  • Minimum Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent Specialized Experience
  • Minimum 4+ Years’ Work Experience
  • Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions for all levels of this position
