Position: Electrical Design Department Manager (Group Leader)
Reports to: Engineering Manager
Electrical Design Department Manager (Group Leader) Job Description:

The Department Manager (Group Leader) supports the safe and timely completion of departmental deliverables through day to day prioritization, assignment of resources, technical guidance and the Human Resources requirements of the department.

Project/Job Operation and Resource Management Responsibilities:

  • Allocate resources on day to day basis to support active jobs
  • Assign resources for unexpected activities in support of current and past jobs
  • Meet scope, budget and schedule of active jobs
  • Strong ability to plan and manage time appropriately
  • Provide updates to the progress of projects through WPM, provide corrective actions as required
  • Analyze problems that arise with projects, offer solutions and implement corrective action
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of skills, processes, and technology; drive and implement Continuous Improvement and update Department policies and procedures as required
  • Ensure adherence to ISO policies and procedures
  • Promote and ensure the SQPD (Safety, Quality, Performance and Delivery) of all jobs
  • Implement strategies with team leaders to mitigate department risk
  • Implement strategies for meeting or exceeding department quality objectives with team leaders
  • Promote 5s in the workplace, lead by example, participate in 5s activities
  • Conduct 5s audits to sustain improvements
  • Allocate resources on day to day basis to support active jobs

Leadership and People Management Responsibilities:

  • Conduct annual and semi-annual review of direct reports with manager as required. Prepare and discuss reviews with Manager prior to conducting
  • Evaluate team members skills and quality of work, implement corrective action
  • Interview prospective new hires and make hiring recommendations to Manager in conjunction with human resources
  • In collaboration with team members, establish personalized and departmental training plans
  • Conduct or delegate training and orientation for new team members
  • Administer discipline as required to direct reports in conjunction with Manager and Human Resources
  • Review online timecards for accuracy and lock weekly by 10:00am Monday (Or Tuesday when Monday is Statutory Holiday
    • Approve and monitor vacation requests of direct reports
  • Communicate appointed delegate for Group Leader for vacation coverage


Relationship Management:

  • Work in conjunction with all managers and Group Leaders to improve process and labour resources development
  • Develop relationships with prospective customers and suppliers while maintaining a positive relationship with existing customers and suppliers

Health and Safety Responsibilities:

  • OHSA Responsibilities
    • ensure workers work in compliance with the OHSA and its regulations;
    • ensure workers use any equipment, protective devices or clothing the employer requires;
    • inform workers about any workplace health and safety hazards that the supervisor is aware of;
    • provide workers written instructions on measures and procedures to be followed for their own protection, if prescribed by regulation; and
    • Ensure every precaution reasonable in the circumstances to protect workers.
    • Participate in workplace inspections with JHSC and monitor safety within department
    • Create awareness about safety matters to all team members

  • In collaboration with the JHSC participate in incidents, complaints and work refusal investigations
  • Correct health and safety contraventions or hazardous conditions

Department Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proficient in designing electrical drawings and control systems for Industrial Automation equipment.
  • Prepare and present customer projects in a professional manner
  • Review machine concept and function with sales, mechanical design and lead developers. With the use of standard Innovative drawing templates, engineers the control package accordingly. Once approved internally the drawings are to be submitted to the customer for their approval.
  • Generate “Electrical Binder” and “Control Assembly” drawing packages as required
  • Generate a complete Bill of Materials (BOM) for purchased components. Bill of Materials (part numbers and quantities) are submitted to purchasing, and also filed in the project binder
  • Work with Technical Manual writer to ensure that proper drawings and documentation are submitted into the Technical Manual package.
  • Research and develop application and use of products involved in a project. Research and development records are to be filed for future reference. Successes and failures to be entered into the PGA file under “Best Practices”
  • Supervise department staff and provide technical leadership on all aspects of the design of the control systems.
  • Assists department designers with verifying their judgment on cost of design/purchase vs. quote inclusions
  • Review design output, from concept to client approval, to ensure delegated duties are performed as per specifications in quotation and design requirements
  • Identify the developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills
  • Develop and maintain partnership with contract design resources. Allocate contractor resource to support active jobs. Review budget scope with contractors prior to start. Submit contractor’s invoices to Purchasing. Review and Approve Contractor Purchase Orders
  • Review and approve drawing packages of department designers, ensuring compliance to all ESA and CSA Safety standards. (See List of standards below that are included but not limited to)
  • Fulfill role of Project Lead as required.
  • Assist Sales Department with quote support applications
  • Review department software requirements. Make recommendations to purchase as required.
  • Occasional travel globally as required
Key Technical Skills and Knowledge
  • Proficient in EPLAN, AutoCAD , Edrawings
  • MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)
    • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing concepts
    • Good understanding of pneumatics and fluid power engineering
    • Working knowledge and understanding of the following Safety Codes
      • ESA/CEC Electrical Codes
      • CSA Z462_Workplace Electrical Safety
      • CSA Z432_Safeguarding of Machinery
      • CSA Z142_Power Press Operation
      • CSA Z434_Robot Safety
  • Minimum Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering or Equivalent Specialized Experience
  • Minimum 5+ Years’ Experience within the Automation or Automotive Manufacturing Field
  • Preference given to candidate holding PEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario) Designation
