Machine Builder
Position: Machine Builder
Reports to: Production Manager
Machine Build Job Description:

The Machine Builder will use output from the Design & Machining departments, together with purchased parts to build custom automation equipment according to specifications in the Project Requirements Form and accepted quote.

Junior Machine Builder Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works cooperatively with customers, fellow employees, contractors, and management.
  • Communicates with management, and fellow staff, any project concerns, project status, and possible solutions.
  • Completes all assigned tasks in a neat and timely fashion based on the accepted hours from the job quote.
  • Understands Innovative Automation’s scheduling and budget requirements, applies personal management skills to meet required time and material allowances.
  • Performs duties and tasks in accordance to all of Innovative Automation’s ISO work instruction procedures located on the Intranet
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts as detailed in the Project Requirements Form to determine functions of the finished machine and set-up requirements.
  • Maintains the original “Build detail drawings” including all returned drawings from our vendors, in the shop binder throughout the entire project
    noted changes to design must be documented on shop drawings and drawing update form as laid out in the ISO drawing update work instruction
    verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly
  • Knowledge pneumatics and/or hydraulics.
  • Installs machined parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Reviews machine function with electrical developer and mechanical design personnel associated with the project
  • Complete general assembly tasks as assigned by management
    maintains a clean tidy work environment
  • Service reports to be completed on a daily basis & returned to management in a timely manner
  • Upon completing the assembly process of the machine, the Junior machine builder signs off on the Project Requirements Form the Junior machine builder is responsible for checking to ensure all signatures present up to that stage from other departments are on the Project Requirements Form prior to signing.
  • Suitable for a mechanically inclined skilled trade’s person with the ability to alter and suggest alterations to machined components.
  • Ability to create and manufacture solutions and details to compliment the intended function of the equipment being assembled.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Travel required
  • Occasional travel as required within North America

Intermediate Machine Builder Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties & responsibilities listed under Junior Machine Builder
  • Possesses the knowledge as to where to find what’s needed for the job
  • Communicates with management, fellow staff, and Customers any project concerns, project status, and possible solutions.
  • Maintains research & development for job from start of the project until commissioning
  • Operate the machine on trial runs to adjust machine settings, cycle times etc. to ensure it meets customer specifications
  • Utilizes ‘issues log’ located on the Intranet ,Email and “Station Issues List’ to document and re-enforce project issues
  • In a leadership role, responsible for tracking all alterations to the drawing package by themselves or others.
    perform functionality testing of purchased & machined parts
  • Signs the “Project requirements Form” located in the master binder, together with the Electrical Developer, when the machine functions according to customer specifications. The Intermediate Machine builder is responsible for checking to ensure all signatures are present up to that stage from other departments are on the Project Requirements Form prior to signing
  • Suitable for a self-directed Journeyman with a Tool & Die, Machinist or equivalent background
  • Capable of backing up Senior Builders
  • Occasional travel as required within North America

Senior Machine Builder Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties & responsibilities listed under Junior & Intermediate Machine Builder
  • Coordinate the final development of the machine in conjunction with the Electrical Department
  • Maintain a positive schedule by negotiating and adjusting the appropriate amount of help.
  • Hold regular project meetings with all departments
  • He/she shall rely on his/her vast past experience in machining, pneumatics & hydraulics to ensure machine functions correctly with customer product.
  • Has the ability to work with the electrical designer / controls developer to select the appropriate pneumatic and hydraulic controls for the projects they are involved in
  • Experience in all aspects of troubleshooting/building automation
  • Ability to suggest, design and alter pneumatic and hydraulic control circuits.

  • Train the customer on: tooling changes, set-up procedures & maintenance
  • Installation & start-up at customer site

  • Have the ability to travel & facilitate all disciplines on the job
  • Monitor health, safety, process & quality
  • Ensure personnel follow regulatory instructions & customer complaints
  • Must be directly involved with incident & accident reports & safety inspections
  • Responsible the maintaining clean and tidy work environment for himself / herself and all those working on the project.
  • Occasional travel as required within North America
  • Give regular accurate written project assessments.
  • Organize and put plans in place to get back on track if the project is slipping or falling behind.

Physical Demands:

This position may require constant standing and frequent walking, kneeling, bending, crouching and twisting. Working in machining also requires constant cervical flexion, the chin to chest movement. Maximum lifting weight can reach about 50lbs, maximum carrying weight is about 30lbs, and the maximum pushing and pulling weights can reach 100-150lbs. Frequent forward and lateral reach may be required, as well as frequent grasping, handling, pinching. Working in this position requires a very strong ability to work alone and self-supervise as well as the ability to supervise others. It also requires the ability to handle attention to detail, tight deadlines, responsibility and accountability and the ability to multi-task.

Education Requirements and Experience for Machine Builder:
  • Minimum Certificate of Qualification for a Precision Metals (General Machinist, Mould Maker or Tool and Die Making) OR Millwright
  • Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions
